When selecting for editor’s picks we’re always searching for those striking photographs that make for an unforgettable single image, whether from a broader series or not. We enjoy the accompanying text some photographers submit with their images, and while not always necessary it can be relevant when understanding the work in full context.

“From the series Lost Islands. In July 1997, I arrived in Hong Kong at Kowloon Airport as an immigrant, carrying a newborn baby in my arms. It was the day after the Mainland Chinese takeover, a start into a new life, for me and for this city. After we moved back to Germany years ago, I painfully realised that Hong Kong is the only city I will ever miss deeply. But now that all hopes of democracy and freedom have been destroyed, I may never be able to return. I walk through German cities, long for the intense colours and scents of Hong Kong and create my own fake Chinese dream.”
