The Harbour
The Harbour is a portrait project I’ve been working on for the last year and I am continuing into 2020 working with and collaborating with Lambeth Harbour. The Harbour is a drop in centre in Brixton, London for people recovering from substance abuse – helping with recovery, advice and support. The portraits feature people whose lives revolve around the centre, from staff members, peer mentors (advanced recovery) and service users (beginning recovery). The photographs are purposefully void of names or roles – this not only helps people maintain a level of anonymity, but also removes them from the most immediate stereotyping and to help reveal the indiscriminate nature of addiction. I set up a studio and shoot monthly portrait sessions in the Harbour and so far I have shot around 50 individuals, some come repeatedly for portraits, some I only see once. Because of the nature of the service, unless I’m photographing a staff member or peer mentor, I never quite know if I will see that person again.
