EDITORS’ PICK

BLACK AND WHITE
Black and White Editors’ Pick
Following Marcin Ryczek’s selection of winning images for our recent Black and White competition, this compilation of 20 images represents some of the other talented photographers whose work struck us and left a mark. Each a stunning image worthy of exposure and attention…
When selecting for editor’s picks we’re always searching for those striking photographs that make for an unforgettable single image, whether from a broader series or not. We enjoy the accompanying text some photographers submit with their images, and while not always necessary it can be relevant when understanding the work in full context.
These are intended to be a conversation starter… so feel free to join the discussion on our social networks.

“My series Crust invites you to look at the hidden beauty within the pure surface of skin, while also revealing its many facets in relation to textures from nature. This disorienting interplay reveals the fragility and variability of our skin and its affinity with the natural elements. For just as a rock erodes, sand forms undulating banks and moss grows on bark, our skin also reacts to a wealth of internal and external stimuli. We get goosebumps when we’re cold and a soft red flush when it’s warm. Or just think of burns, scars, birthmarks and wrinkles. The fleeting map of contours and lines that is imprinted on the skin by a chair or garment. On the one hand, Crust focuses on people with atypical skin, but on the other, it also shows skin that reacts captivatingly.”

“Into the Woods. The final morning of a 5-day backpacking trip up to Glacier Meadows in the Olympic National Park of Washington had us at The Olympus Guard Station. I found this composition the night before and was happy to see the early morning sunlight adding some wonderful touches to the scene.”

“Hoisting the Sails. Despite all the technology, sailing still dominates in many fishing communities around the world. The techniques have been the same for centuries. In this photo, the crew of a small dhow hoist the latin sail for the crossing back to Mozambique Island.”

“Taken at the seaside in Cyprus as part of my years-long street photography practice. Unlike tourist, locals do not always go to seaside to sunbath or swim, but often just to walk and spend peaceful and relaxing time. Seaside is a place to be alone and to find peace for some. This usually happens during the so called offseason times. I try to capture this effort of finding peace at the sea side through some of my street photographs.”
