World Travelers Editors’ Pick

Following Steve McCurry’s selection of winning images for our recent World Travelers competition, this compilation of 20 images represents some of the other talented photographers whose work struck us and left a mark. Each a stunning image worthy of exposure and attention…

When selecting for editor’s picks we’re always searching for those striking photographs that make for an unforgettable single image, whether from a broader series or not. We enjoy the accompanying text some photographers submit with their images, and while not always necessary it can be relevant when understanding the work in full context.

These are intended to be a conversation starter… so feel free to join the discussion on our social networks.

“From the series The Eagle Hunters of Altai. In the center of the Altai Mountains on the border between Kazakhstan and Mongolia, it is the territory of Muslim aborigine in Kazakhstan. This is the habitat of legendary hunters. They are respectively called “Bergedchin” in Kazakhstan Language or “Eagle Hunters”.

For the past 250 years, these hunters have used golden eagles to hunt the animals. They’ve been training since they were ten years old to hunt in the difficult terrain in the mountains on horseback with their loyal birds in the mountains, as if they were legendary warriors from ancient folklore. In the winter, when temperatures drop below -30 degrees Celsius, everything must adapt to survive, and this includes the interaction between humans and animals. The remarkable hunting talent of Burgedchin and the hunting instinct of golden eagles rely on each other to hunt food in winter. Nowadays, there are around 250 hunters in the nation. The growing city and the advancement of technology are enticing fresh generations of villagers to dismount and work in the city. However, as long as there are descendants who are proud of their hunter’s way, the sound of the golden eagle will continue to reverberate in the heart of the Altai Mountains.”

“From the series The Land. This series highlights the significance of certain permanences, no less than that of certain absences, of visible elements and invisible elements. A game is taking place between the photographer-explorer and us, spectators-detectives in search of narrative clues. The places filmed seem to hide in the darkness of the night, only to reveal themselves under artificial lights, bright colors or under the gaze of some statues, silent as gods and the only semi-human witnesses of a silent landscape. The forms change, chase each other and are modified in a deliberately different and mysterious repetition. Subtly disturbing, deliberately open. The photographer does not only talk to us about the places themselves, but also about the photographic medium itself. Is the latter still a possible tool to learn about reality? Yes, the author questions the landscape, with the desire to bring out his own experience, in a dialectical relationship between himself and the world. Seeing what you would not see and understanding what you would not understand, here is the challenge posed and an invitation to us spectators to do the same.”

“From the series The Everyday of Life. An ongoing photography project that seeks to uncover the beauty of everyday life in places we all too often forget to look. The photographs long to be both uneventful and ordinary. These are simple photographs of everyday life, of people at ease in their lives even though their lives may not be easy.

Young Men and Goats. These young men and boys have been put in charge of looking after the family goats, at least for the next few days. This photograph was taken a few days before the August 1, 2020 Festival of Sacrifice in Bangladesh when these goats will be sacrificed in the ceremonial offering to Allah. Dhaka, Bangladesh.”

“The Jailla. Today’s ship’s boy – hopefully tomorrow’s captain.

Two years ago, when I drove back to my accommodation after a long day in the Rohingya refugee camp, I stopped shortly at the seaside. Immediately, I was fascinated by the hustle and bustle there. I met the ethnic group of the Jailla. For them the access to the sea is of existential importance, because they live exclusively from fishing. When I asked the boy in this picture what he was doing here, he told me that he is helping the fishermen to pull their so called moon boats out of the water after fishing. He gets a few coins for this. He hopes that someday he will have saved enough that he can buy a moon boat for himself, so that he can fulfill his dream of a better life as a captain on his own boat. I hope that someday he will be at the wheel of his own moon boat, sailing into a decent life. When I look at his strong gaze, I am convinced that he will make it.”

“From the series Hong Kong Lines and Patterns. A photography series that depicts my creative vision of my hometown. It comes with a fine art aesthetic and the compositional approach of isolating urban subjects, geometric elements and forms from the chaotic urban environment of Hong Kong. It portrays the way of life of different urban characters in the context of their surrounding geometric environment, which were all culled from mundane everyday scenes, with fleeting moments seized from near and distant. Nevertheless, those subjects look trapped and lost inside an artificial geometric labyrinth without realising it – perhaps this series is also a metaphorical view of urbanity and the hectic contemporary way of life in a metropolis like Hong Kong.”

“From the series Shelter from the Storm. The treehouse, India. This series looks inside the world of those who are out there on the road, traveling the globe in search for other values than the ones they were taught to believe in. They struggle to find their place in the capitalistic western society they grew up in. Gaining the freedom to unfold, developing a deeper love between humans and with all of natures beings are the motivation that drives them to try the unknown new. So they go out there with few belongings and an open heart to walk on the less known roads. On Rainbow Gatherings, nudist islands and communities they come together to develop and practice the ideas of a utopian society.

Having traveled the world for years myself, I know that the reality of this lifestyle is so different than the fairytales that have become so popular in todays social media. With this work, I want to shine a light on the inner realities of the constant travelers.”
